Mastering Tricky Words
Supporting writing and reading of irregular words

Some frequently used words have letter sound correspondences that have not yet been taught, these are called tricky words in Jolly Phonics. Jolly Phonics introduces 72 tricky words systematically, using clear techniques to help pupils remember them. They are introduced from the /sh/ lesson in group 6 onward.
Tips for Success
In Jolly Phonics, tricky words are not introduced until the end of Group 6. By then most pupils are good at blending words with the letter sounds they have been already taught.
Identifying the tricky bit helps the pupils remember how to read and write them correctly.
Tricky words require memory, as well as good blending and segmenting skills.
Ideally, before tricky words are taught, any extra support required for learning letter sounds, formation, blending and segmenting should have started.
