Literacy is one of Curriculum for Wales’ mandatory cross-curricular skills. It’s particularly important for teachers to teach reading effectively, as this skill is used across many areas of learning and in life beyond the classroom.
Curriculum for Wales also advocates a systematic and consistent approach to phonics – teaching learners the phonemenes that make up different graphemes in a progressive way, from the simplest units of sound to the more complex.
A Systematic Phonics Programme
Children learn sounds through actions, songs, and stories – making it engaging and effective for a range of learning preferences, including SEND and ESL.
As soon as children learn a few sounds, they are taught to blend them into words. This helps them decode words early and develop their reading confidence.
The learning in our programme builds on previous knowledge, reinforcing skills through repetition and application in both reading and writing.
“Jolly Classroom has been a saviour to me. Having lessons and activities ready to go saves so much time and allows me to channel my energy into other areas. The content of Jolly Classroom activities aligns perfectly with the planning documents that have been created and very importantly, the children engage very positively through the IWB.”
