Literacy is one of Curriculum for Wales’ mandatory cross-curricular skills. It’s particularly important for teachers to teach reading effectively, as this skill is used across many areas of learning and in life beyond the classroom.

Curriculum for Wales also advocates a systematic and consistent approach to phonics – teaching learners the phonemenes that make up different graphemes in a progressive way, from the simplest units of sound to the more complex.

Proven Results

Nursery Children Learning (1)

Jolly Phonics has been influential in the development and popularisation of phonics worldwide. Our programmes have seen noticeable results in the UK and diverse countries around the world.

This can be seen clearly in the recent 2021 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS). Countries that have integrated Jolly Phonics into their primary education curriculum have seen notable improvements in their PIRLS score.

Ireland, in particular, shot up 8 places in the league table – from 10th in the world in 2011 to 2nd in the world in 2021! This was achieved through 86% of Irish primary schools choosing Jolly Phonics as their dedicated phonics programme. Singapore, Hong Kong and England also performed well (ranking 1st, 3rd and 6th place respectively).

Don’t Just Take Our Word for It

“Jolly Classroom has been a saviour to me. Having lessons and activities ready to go saves so much time and allows me to channel my energy into other areas. The content of Jolly Classroom activities aligns perfectly with the planning documents that have been created and very importantly, the children engage very positively through the IWB.”
