Jolly Phonics uses a systematic, synthetic phonics approach: children learn the main letter sounds, blend them for reading and segment them for spelling. The Activity Books give children extra, low-pressure practice with those sounds in a format that feels like fun rather than formal lessons. By the time children reach the end of Activity Book 7, they have met all the main Jolly Phonics letter sounds, practised blending and segmenting them in lots of different words, and started to read and write simple sentences – a natural bridge into Jolly Phonics Pupil Books, decodable readers and the wider Jolly Literacy range.

Across the seven books, children gain more phonic knowledge and literacy skills, learning six new letter sounds in every book. Early books focus on single letter sounds, pencil control and blending short regular words; later books introduce digraphs and tricky words, and build up to reading and writing simple sentences.
Along the way, children practise:
Activity Book 1 introduces children to their very first group of letter sounds: s a t i p n. On the opening page, Inky Mouse, Snake and Bee invite children on a letter‑sound adventure, and every sound gets its own story, action and activities.
Early pages gently improve pencil control: children learn the tripod grip and follow pencil trails from left to right, with clear visual guidance and simple tips for adults.
Activity Book 2 continues the letter-sounds adventure with the next group of sounds: c k e h r m d. Inky Mouse, Snake and Bee return with new scenes, and each sound comes with its own story, action and activity set to help children say, hear and write it.
Activities build on Book 1 with more letter-formation practice, playful pages that get children listening for sounds at the beginning and end of words, plus plenty of stickers and games to keep them excited about early reading.
Activity Book 3 moves on to the sounds g o u l f b, taking Inky Mouse, Snake and Bee on a beachy letter-sounds adventure where each new sound is introduced with a short story, an action and a colourful activity spread.
Children get extra confidence with writing these letters, spotting them in bright picture scenes and using them in simple words – all wrapped up in the same mix of stickers, puzzles and game-like pages they loved in the earlier books.
Activity Book 4 introduces the next set of sounds and letter combinations: ai j oa ie ee or. Inky Mouse, Snake and Bee lead children through fresh stories and actions that bring these sound patterns to life, with each one supported by its own set of child-friendly activities.
The pages offer plenty of practice writing the new sounds, spotting them in pictures and using them inside simple words, while stickers, colouring and playful challenges keep the learning light and motivating.
Activity Book 5 takes children to the next stage of their Jolly Phonics journey with the sounds z w ng v oo oo. Inky Mouse, Snake and Bee go on new adventures, and each sound is introduced with its own short story, action and activity set so children can hear it, say it and write it with growing confidence.
Along the way, children revisit earlier sounds from Books 1–4 and start to read and write more challenging words using everything they’ve learned so far, supported by clear letter-formation practice, colourful scenes and plenty of engaging sticker and game-style pages.
Activity Book 6 keeps the letter-sounds adventure going with a lively circus setting and a new group of sounds: y x ch sh th th. Inky Mouse, Snake and Bee explore yo-yo tricks, clown classes and silly shows, with each sound introduced through a short story, an action and a focused activity spread.
Children build on what they’ve learned in Books 1–5 by practising these new letters and digraphs, blending them in short words and meeting their first “tricky words” inside simple sentences – all supported by clear writing practice pages, stickers and game-like activities.
Activity Book 7 completes the letter-sounds adventure with the final group of sounds: qu ou oi ue er ar. Inky Mouse, Snake and Bee explore a busy wildlife park and beyond, with each new sound introduced through a short story, an action and a fresh activity spread.
Children revisit the sounds learned in Books 1–6, practise writing these new letter combinations and start to read and write simple sentences using both regular and “tricky” words – a satisfying way to see just how far their phonics journey has come.
"Everything is so aesthetically pleasing, the children are really captivated. They are blending and segmenting, they are just doing amazing."

"Jolly Classroom has been a saviour to me. Having lessons and activities ready to go saves so much time and allows me to channel my energy into other areas. The content of Jolly Classroom activities aligns perfectly with the planning documents that have been created and very importantly, the children engage very positively with the delivery through the IWB."

| Work through the pages in order so sounds build up gradually. | Introduce a sound in your main phonics lesson, then use the relevant Activity Book pages for follow‑up practice. |
| Start by reading the short sound story together and doing the action. | Send selected pages or a whole book home to strengthen school‑home links. |
| Help your child trace the letters, then try a few on their own. | Use the sticker and word pages towards the end of each book as informal evidence of progress. |
| Use the crafts, games and I‑Spy pages (like the picnic and park scenes in Book 1) as fun review of sounds they’ve already learned. | .... |
