The Jolly Literacy Framework The Jolly Literacy programme is built around three key strands that work together: 1. Jolly Phonics This is the foundation stage, where children are introduced to the sounds (phonemes) of the English language and how they are represented by letters (graphemes). Children learn 42 letter sounds (including digraphs such as sh, th, ai, ee).
Lessons emphasize the five key skills:
Learning the letter sounds – recognizing sounds rather than letter names.
Learning letter formation – writing each letter correctly.
Blending – pushing sounds together to read words.
Identifying sounds in words (segmenting) – listening for sounds in words to support spelling.
Tricky words – learning irregular words that cannot be sounded out easily (e.g., the, said, was).
Jolly Phonics uses songs, actions, flashcards, stories, and games to make learning highly interactive.
The training will also cover the lesson delivery approach and the assessment method

Nasiib Kaleebu
Jolly Trainer
Nasiib has over 10 years of demonstrable professional experience in teaching and training at elementary, secondary and University level. In collaboration with Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) and the National Department of Education in Papua New Guinea (January 2012 to December 2013), Nasiib used the Jolly Phonics approach to implement the SMS Story pilot – a randomized controlled trial that tested the effectiveness of sending daily text messages and lesson plans to teachers in elementary classrooms on children’s reading ability.
Agnes Nalubega
Jolly Trainer
Agnes is from Kampala, Uganda. From a very young age, she wanted to become a teacher. Agnes holds a Bachelor's degree in Primary Education and has teaching experience of over 26 years. Agnes has worked in public, private and international school settings, with a concentration in early literacy skills, and has used Jolly Phonics for the past ten years.
